Frequently Asked Questions

We know starting your own Internet Radio station broadcast can feel intimidating at first, but our FAQs are here to help you jump right in!

Should I use SHOUTcast or Icecast?

Overall, there are very few differences between the SHOUTcast and Icecast that actually matter. Some people just prefer one or the other, or might have a specific need so we offer both. Some people like that Icecast is OpenSource, and other people like that SHOUTcast is not.
Historically, the SHOUTcast stream directory tends to get more traffic, however this really doesn't matter if you already have a listener base or if you are promoting the stream on your own.

What exactly is an AutoDJ and why do I need it?

In short, an AutoDJ allows you to schedule music to play when you are not live. You can also run you stream from AutoDJ 24/7.
To use AutoDJ, upload music or other MP3 programming to your account, and then use our tools to create scheduled playlists. (These files will need to be the same bitrate as your stream.) You can choose files to be played in heavy, light, or standard rotation. It can even automatically queue up requests from your listeners.
This is a great option for users who have poor internet connections and/or cannot do a live stream all the time. You can even schedule your ads, promos, and any other content, so your listeners won't even know it's not live.

How do I advertise my stream to get more listeners?

Self-promotion on social media, your website, and word of mouth are some of the best ways to promote your station and grow listenership. Contests and giveaways are another great way to create buzz around your station.
Shoutcast and Icecast both have a station directory that you can be listed on:

What's the legality of running an Internet Radio station?

If you are playing copyrighted material and do not have permission from the copyright owner then you should have a license. We do not provide licenses with our servers, it is each station's own responsibility to make sure that you have the correct licensing you require.
